The CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) has done extensive research to map the prevalence of STI infection in the United States. Estimates place about 20% of the US population in the category of people who, during the year 2018, have at some point been infected with an STI. That year, the American Healthcare System is estimated to have spent nearly $16 billion on healthcare costs alone.

A total of 8 common STIs have been tracked for the purpose of this analysis, including: Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Hepatitis B (HBV), HSV-2, Human Papillomavirus (HPV), HIV, as well as Syphilis and trichomoniasis.

Of all these infections, the most prevalent were considered to be chlamydia, genital herpes, HPV and trichomoniasis, accounting for approximately 98% of all infections and 93% of STIs recorded in the year 2018 alone.

It is extremely important to take these estimates into account, considering the serious consequences of leaving these STIs untreated for an extended period of time. CDC experts are using the data to better understand the scope of the STI epidemic and find workable solutions to prevent infection and determine which segments of the population are most at risk.
